On February 17, 2011 "Joel" was rescued from someone's yard in Manning, SC. He is a pitiful, literal bag of bones. The starvation he has endured made him too weak to stand up, his muscles eaten up, and only bones, tendons & skin left. We're sure he was only hours from death. A dog his size should weigh about 80 lbs. He weighed 30. We took a chance trying to save him. Why? Because as three of us stood over him and looked into his eyes we saw his will to live and his tail wagging with all the strength he could manage.
Since Joel arrived at the Shelter he ate...and ate...and ate. All his organs seem to be functioning too in spite of his condition. Our Vet Tech treated his few deep cuts and abrasions. His second day, he went for a short ride outside in his "cadillac" (a green wagon with towels in it) to get a little fresh air and sunshine. Several of us went outside to sit with him, talk to him, and he even enjoyed a belly-rub!
We've made Joel our new "poster child". If you're interested in his progress please visit our website weekly for updates (and photos). Oh...and you'll also be seeing his picture on our Donation Boxes at Shoney's, A Second Chance Thrift Store, The Summerton Diner, and various local eateries.
Joel stayed the weekend at AJ's house. His spirit is was good and we were all optimistic, though we knew it would be a slow process. Our Vet Tech and a Kennel Tech rigged up a sling to help Joel stand a little every day. His "therapy" lasted about 30 minutes a day in February 2011.
Joel's healing progress was slow, but constant and his cheerful, can-do attitude enabled his recovery. On February 28, 2011, he walked--just for a short time, but on his own--with a BIG SMILE, and tail a'waggin'! YAY for Joel!!
In addition to his regular high protein dog food, he's a great "catcher" of bites of burger and fish sandwiches, and we're SOOOOooooo proud of our boy Joel.
March 15, 2011 - Joel is growing and healing so well. He is walking on his own, on a leash no less! He has found friends and loves to play and has found the strength to romp again. As of Friday, Joel weighed in at 50 lbs! He has the sweetest personality and once he has healed completely, will make a wonderful addition to some lucky person or family. His "bedsores" are healing nicely. If you haven't met Joel personally and are interested in doing so, please come visit him during our regular business hours here at the Shelter.
UPDATE: April 6, 2011. Joel has been adopted by a wonderful family from Florence, SC. After checking their credentials, background, and "temperament" we feel confident that Joel and his new family are an exceptional good match, and they'll spend many happy years together. Here are some pictures of Joel with his new family....
November 30,2011 Joel's new mom emailed us a new picture of Joel, Yay !! He is doing wonderful, loving life and his family which includes a young man that loves and plays with him. He has gained weight and is doing great medically. He looks so handsome in his Christmas hat !
